BBQ Meatballs

Updated: May 6

Moist and delicious meatballs covered in a homemade BBQ sauce and oven-baked are easy, delicious, and ready in less than an hour. This is our favorite meatball recipe! I like serving them with some mashed potatoes and a veggie for the ultimate home-cooked meal.

Ingredients you will need:

For the meatballs-

  • Lean ground beef- You could also mix it up with ground turkey, chicken, or sausage.

  • Crushed crackers- I like to use crushed saltines, you can substitute with bread crumbs or oatmeal if you prefer.

  • Egg-

  • Onion- Yellow or white onion, chopped finely. If you have big chunks of onion the meatballs might not hold together as well.

  • Ketchup and brown sugar- These are the secret ingredients that make these meatballs so delicious;)

  • Spices- Salt, black pepper, and dry mustard powder.

For the sauce-

  • Ketchup- This is the base of the sauce.

  • Onion- Finely chopped onion for flavor and texture.

  • Liquid smoke- For that smoky BBQ flavor

  • Brown sugar- For a touch of sweetness.

Ok, let's start with chopping the onion finely and crushing the crackers as well. You don't want large pieces of onion as the meatballs might not hold together as well. Mix together the ground beef, onion, crackers, egg, ketchup, sugar and spices, be careful not to overmix, just until combined.

To make the meatballs, I like to use a 1/4 cup measure to scoop it up. Using your hands, shape into balls, it's important to keep them uniform in size so they cook evenly. If you want smaller meatballs just use a smaller scoop;) Transfer to an 8x8 inch square baking dish.

Mix the sauce ingredients together and spoon it over the meatballs. Bake at 400 degrees F for 30 minutes.
